Director of National Initiatives

REPORTS TO:

Vice President of National Programs and Initiatives

BACKGROUND:

The National Constitution Center (NCC), located on Philadelphia's Independence Mall, is the first museum in the world dedicated to honoring and explaining the U.S. Constitution through more than 100 interactive and multi-media exhibits, artifacts and film. The NCC also houses the Annenberg Center for Education and Outreach, which serves as a hub for national constitutional education, debates, teacher resources and as a home for visiting scholars and experts. The NCC serves as a "town hall" for discussion of constitutional issues with more than 50 public programs a year.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of National Initiatives will work collaboratively with the VP of National Programs and Initiatives and closely with other staff to develop, coordinate and oversee the annual implementation of the NCC’s programs and initiatives. These initiatives include, but are not limited to, The Peter Jennings Project for Journalists and the Constitution, Constitution Day and the Liberty Medal. These programs will help the NCC fulfill its broader mission of helping Americans develop the tools, skills and motivation to become truly active citizens. The Director will also have overall responsibility for developing and managing the NPI budget, developing new sources of revenue and for overseeing the department’s growing presence on the Internet.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the department’s three major annual programs – the Peter Jennings Project, Constitution Day, and the Liberty Medal ceremony
  • Develop and distribute educational resources for Jennings and Constitution Day.
  • Work with the VP and other staff members to secure speakers and prominent figures for the department’s annual and evening programs
  • Develop and oversee other national initiatives – for instance, the We the Voters project during Election ’08.
  • Manage the various budgets for the department.
  • Manage the Jennings, Constitution Day, and Liberty Medal website
  • Develop new sources of revenue by creating new products or improving existing ones, and then establish a method to sell and distribute the products
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years marketing, public relations, or program development experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Team player and competent leader with proven managerial skills
  • Ability to prepare and manage budget projections and expenditures
  • Ability to develop and manage websites and oversee web design
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to produce under tight deadlines with multiple priorities
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • Deep interest in and knowledge of constitutional history and commitment to the Center’s vision of promoting active citizenship
