Vice President of National Programs and Initiatives

REPORTS TO:

President & CEO

BACKGROUND:

The National Constitution Center (NCC), located on Philadelphia's Independence Mall, is the first museum in the world dedicated to honoring and explaining the U.S. Constitution through more than 100 interactive and multi-media exhibits, artifacts and film. The NCC also houses the Annenberg Center for Education and Outreach, which serves as a hub for national constitutional education, debates, teacher resources and as a home for visiting scholars and experts. The NCC serves as a "town hall" for discussion of constitutional issues with more than 50 public programs a year.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Serve as a member of the senior management team and have responsibility for developing and implementing a broad-reaching strategy for establishing, funding, and growing the national and international reputation of the Center through innovative programs and special events. This strategy will involve using various and emerging media to reach all types of audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement strategies for the Center to become the preeminent national center and resource for discussion, debate and education about the U.S. Constitution
  • Develop a menu of both adult-oriented programs and events that have national reach, including but not be limited to, news programming, documentary film, radio programs, web-based distribution, debates and forums, and public hearings.
  • Develop relationships with prominent individuals and companies that expand the audience and distribution of adult programs
  • Manage the Peter Jennings Project for Journalists and the Constitution annual conference; including contacting and organizing speakers’, recruiting participating journalist; and developing the three to four key programs for the weekend.
  • Manage, with senior staff, the Liberty Medal selection and production.
  • Work in tandem with Development staff to provide information that will lead to sponsorship of specific adult programs as well as in the creation of new adult programs that are likely to be sponsored,
  • If so desired, establish, convene and manage the Center’s Panel of Elected officials
  • Participate in efforts to make the Center an international center for education on the U.S. Constitution
  • Develop national and international relationships with organizations (public, private, governmental, educational) that could have an interest in sponsoring a Constitution oriented program at the Center
  • Work with the Center’s Civic Research team to create a team of nationally respected public opinion survey firms to conduct a yearly survey of the American public on the Constitution
  • Undertake special projects as assigned by the President or his designee

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in journalism, political science or related field required
  • A minimum of 7 – 10 years journalism, public relations, or program development experience; television production experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Extensive contacts in the media industry strongly preferred
  • Team player and competent leader with proven managerial skills
  • Ability to prepare and manage budget projections and expenditures
  • Deep interest in and knowledge of constitutional history and commitment to the Center’s vision of promoting active citizenship
